“One of the first performance poetry pieces I wrote over two decades ago was called 'Role Models'. My daughter was approaching her teens and I became more and more aware of the heavy intrusion of the beauty industry into her life as she developed into a young woman. I worried she would get caught up in the trap of makeup, fillers, and falseness. Last year Priscilla Pike started life as a simple sketch I did one sunny afternoon on the back of my boat after spotting one in the water near the jetty. Later when painting something else, I accidentally dropped some red paint onto her, which naturally developed into her bold lips, followed by a crown of natural florals.

It wasn't an intentional painting; it just evolved. But as it came together, it instantly reminded me of the poem I wrote all those years ago. It made me realize just how much more the younger generation has to contend with today.
